You know that Japanese dancing-style video game that came out a few years ago? Dance Dance Revolution, DDR, etc.? Well, it's not really popular here any more--I have yet to see it in a single arcade. But apparently it's popular enough now in the latin world that they've made a whole movie about it. Man, I hope it gets released here--I'd even pay the crazy Tokyo movie theater prices ($20 a pop) to see it!

Cinema du Parc has closed =(

I just read in Adrienne's blog that Cinema du Parc has closed. Even though I don't live in Montreal anymore, this makes me sad. I always had a membership there, and saw a ton of cool movies as a result. The Hour has a write-up about it, which basically blames the AMC Forum Theatre for the Parc's demise. I'm sure that was a big factor, but I think the Parc could have survived if they handled themselves better. They were located right beside a giant group of rich McGill kids. That should have been one of their core markets, but I rarely saw much Parc advertising at McGill or around the ghetto (except for their schedules, which does count somewhat I guess).

Anyway, this post is just me shedding an online tear for the good ole Cinema du Parc. :'-(

Little Miss Sunshine is an absolutely hilarious movie. You should go and see it, you'll like it. I give it 10/10.

Cars (by Pixar) is a very nice movie. Funny and colorful. I give it 8/10.

Superman Returns was OK, but nothing special. I give it 5/10.

The Star Wars Holiday Special

For all you lazy-dazers/hayfever afflicted people out there, there are two television specials this week that will make you laugh. Note: Check you local listings. I have a feeling that both shows will not be shown in Canada unless they are hugely popular in southern markets first. Find a friend with mega-satellite or hope that the CBC picks this stuff up during their negotiations.

First up, The Upright Citizens Brigade taped a special star-studded, veteran performer driven "Asssscat" improv pilot which will air on Wednesday September 7, 11pm on Bravo or Bravo.ca.

Then, the sheepishly endearing New Zealand musical duo, Flight of the Conchords, are chasing their big break with an HBO special, Friday September 9, 11:59pm. They write some very witty songs, search them out before they sign multiple figure contracts.

Times and availability will vary, so don't take my word for it.

The unappreciated

This is just to tell you all that you should go see the new movie "The Constant Gardner". Addrienne and i saw it last night (it's playing at Parc) and it was fantastic. On our way home, though, we talked about how it is the type of film that will get good reviews but not a lot of people will actually want to go out and see it. It's got great cinematography, a great story, great acting, lots of suspence, and it has a relevant political message.
If anyone else wants to suggest great but unnappreciated films please do; i am tired of standing in the video store debating between something that looks terrible and something that looks marginally less terrible.

I'm now watching this movie on CBC called "Eisenstein". So far, I've seen 45 minutes about Soviet film-making, and I haven't learned one damned thing about relativity.

MANA - beyond belief

MANA - beyond belief is a film directed by a friend of my uncle's. The trailer looks really cool, and it appears to be generating some good buzz.

The opening is July 26th in Toronto, 7:00 PM at the Royal Cinema at College & Grace. Additional screenings on July 27, 28, and 30th (all at 7PM). It starts a regular run August 5 at Varsity VIP Cinema, Toronto. Hopefully it will come to Montreal sometime soon also.

My Ghetto-cool Steadycam

Today I built a ghetto-cool steadycam. Using the aforementioned instructions, about $20 worth of materials, Mariana's step-dad and his tools. It turned out to be pretty easy. Now the stage is all set to make a music video for that stunning man Bryan Walsh! I canna hardly wait...

the poor man's Steadicam�

A little while ago I was talking with Dan Beirne about steadycams, and he said that it wasn't that hard to make them yourslef. I just saw instructions online on how to make a steadycam for $14 (american). It does require some tools that I don't have, but I'm sure that someone I know in montreal has access to them. So then, who wants to make a steadycam with me?

Video troubles? Get quicktime

A few people have told me that they haven't been able to view some of the videos that I have linked to. The reason for this travesty is that you probably don't have a recent version of QuickTime installed on your computer.

QuickTime is a video/media library created by Apple Computer. You need the quicktime player installed to be able to watch movies encoded in the QuickTime formats. If you want to be able to view all the QT videos out there then you should go and download it. It works on windows as well as mac.

i think Taber needs a new name

I successfully transfered the video files for Taber to my computer today. I was able to walk out of the education building with the project drive with no questions being asked. I made my move when the attendant's back was turned. It's possible that I was allowed to do it, but it still felt like theft. Which can be a good feeling (if you're in the right mood). So now editing can be done from my home. Although I found out that my computer has exactly half of the recommended system requirements to run iMovie (700 Mhz vs my 350). This means that patience will be required...

I also set up a partition on my computer running MacOS X 10.1 in order to troubleshoot problems that people have reported with Lux 2. I solved the main problem already (I think). All it took was changing the code that loaded nibs to use the method in NSApplication rather then the one in NSWindowController. They are pretty much exactly the same, except one seems to crash under 10.1. What fun supporting multiple OSes is...

I just saw a killer awesome movie that I had never heard of. Tis called Repo Man, starring Emilio Estevez. It was out of this world crazy-funny with an attitude. If you like the Monty Python then you should love this movie. The sound is very well done as well. Keep your ears open for added fun.

I also recently saw Igby Goes Down, which was cool too.

Taber

The filming of Taber has now commenced! I got some nice footage from the marijuana march on saturday, and then we filmed a whole bunch of stuff at the tam-tams today. There's plenty of funky and/or crazy people out there if you go to the right places. So days 1 and 2 of production have been declared a success. Nothing was broken and cool things have been recorded. I think we have about 1.5 hours of footage. We're gonna look it over and maybe do some editing this week. Hoorah!
