Go Spos!

Twenty years ago today, I went to my first baseball game. The Expos had the NL East lead, a half-game up on the Pirates, and it was half-price ticket day for under 16s, so I convinced my parents to drive all the way to the Big O with the family.

The Meech Lake Accord had failed the day before and it was St-Jean-Baptiste Day, so for the first (but not last) time in Expos history, many in the large (for the Expos) crowd of 25,000 booed Canada's national anthem. Anytime the Expos played at home on St-Jean-Baptise Day after that, they played the anthems during the warmup so that no one would be there to boo.

We sat in the first row of the upper deck, right behind home plate. Dennis Martinez had a solid start, but the relief was weak and the Pirates won the game, retaking the NL East lead (which they kept for the rest of the year). Disappointing, but I'll never forget how awesome it was to eat peanuts and ice cream and watch the Expos in the Big O on a hot summer day, during that brief time when the retractable roof actually worked.

Last night, I went to a Just for Laughs show called "The Green Room", where headliners get interviewed casually. I lucked out- for my $18, I got to see Lewis Black, Billy Connolly, Eddie Izzard, and Louis C.K.. And when Eddie Izzard got tired and had to make a phone call (?!), Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald subbed in.

Due to the star-studdedness of it, I was lucky to have bought my ticket in advance: it was pretty awesome to get into Theatre Ste-Catherine (or "this corridor", said while Moses Znaimer (the guy who runs CityTV, MuchMusic, and half of the other crappy Canadian cable channels) stands outside, waiting to see if his pass will get him in.

A few good quotes:
"The words 'mission accomplished' can now no longer be used for anythig except a fuck-up." - Eddie Izzard

"Bush ruined the words 'mission accomplished' like Hitler ruined the little moustache." - Louis C.K.

"In the old days Britain, if we wanted to go to war, we'd send in a gunboat and blow the shit out of the place for a few hours, then come home and declare victory. We didn't stick around to see how it turned out. That would be bloody stupid." - Billy Connolly

"Bonnie Price Charlie was a retarded Italian dwarf. No wonder the Jacobite rebellion didn't work. Can you imagine an army of huge Scottish soldiers on their clydesdales being led by some wanker on a shetland pony, waving "Bongiorno!"
-Billy Connolly

"Who the fuck is Bonnie Prince Charlie? What the hell's a Jacobite? You guys are talking about more shit on this stage than I've ever even thought of, I'm going to spend the whole rest of the night: google this, wikipedia that..." - Lewis Black
