Bring Your Own Mini-Bus Transit

Large portions of the world have a bring-your-own mini-bus transit system. Where anyone who has seats can pick up people waiting at transit stops.

The government could enable some form of this here by giving taxis the ability to pick up multiple passengers. Taking it further, ad-hoc carpooling at transit hubs could eventually fill many of the empty seats in cars on the road.

This post is based on ideas raised at Vancouver Transit Camp during the session Private Alternatives and Curb Rights.

PS: The government should also just buy more buses! Instead they waste our money on disastrous mega-projects like the Cambie line.

Policemen inciting riots?

Here's a CBC report (video or text) about police dressing up as anarchists and trying to start a riot during the recent SPP protests in Quebec.

The boots of the provocateurs match those of the police, and the men fled behind the police line to escape. The police refuse to say who the men were, and no other protesters recognize them. You can watch the full union footage on youtube, which is where the CBC got the story from.

The case for higher speed limits on Hwy. 401 (Trans-Canada Highway):

Gord Thompson may be the only man in Ontario ever charged under the Highway Traffic Act for obeying the letter of the law. The teacher from Campbellford and another motorist caused a four-kilometre traffic jam on Highway 401 seven years ago by driving side by side at the posted 100 km/h speed limit. They were charged with obstructing traffic and had their licences temporarily suspended.

Weeks earlier, Thompson had been ticketed for going 117 km/h on the same road and staged his slow-motion protest after a judge told him he was breaking the law by going even a kilometre over the posted limit.

New Scientist says that Marijuana might cause new cell growth in the brain. Too bad it's arbitrarily prohibited. It's high time that Canada unlocks the MJ, I hope Dion agrees. It's also high time in my apartment.
