Drupal forums showdown: phpBB, vBulletin, UIE

Everyone seems to agree that the forums built-in to Drupal suck, as forum software goes. As I write this in July 2007, there are 3 options for getting better forums integrated with Drupal.

Option 1: The phpBB module for drupal.

Pros: - phpBB is a high quality forum package.
- has lots of mods and themes available to customize the forum.
- widespread use means some users will be familiar with it.

Cons: - Module is complicated to install and maintain.
- Hacking required to make the forum pages look the same as the drupal pages.

Option 2: vbDrupal is a fork of drupal that has ported it on top of a vBulletin base.

Pros: - vBulletin is an excellent forum package.
- has lots of mods available to customize the forum.
- widespread use means some users will be familiar with it.

Cons: - vBulletin license costs $160 US
- License terms require "Copyright ©2000 - 2007, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd." on the bottom of forum pages.
- vbDrupal is a branch away from the main drupal development tree.

Option 3: The UIE forum module for drupal.

Pros: - More integrated with drupal.

Cons: - Not an established forum. Unknown quality and it seems to be just 1 guy working on it.

----

None of these 3 options make it so the search field in drupal pages also search the forums. Google could do this for you if everything's on the same domain, and apparently drupal has some hooks to make this easy.

Looking forward, the DruBB group is planning to improve the default forums in drupal. They've got their work cut out for them.

This research was done for a community/forum website I am helping setup. More info on that in the future.

Going Green

Last night, I went to a Just for Laughs show called "The Green Room", where headliners get interviewed casually. I lucked out- for my $18, I got to see Lewis Black, Billy Connolly, Eddie Izzard, and Louis C.K.. And when Eddie Izzard got tired and had to make a phone call (?!), Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald subbed in.

Due to the star-studdedness of it, I was lucky to have bought my ticket in advance: it was pretty awesome to get into Theatre Ste-Catherine (or "this corridor", said while Moses Znaimer (the guy who runs CityTV, MuchMusic, and half of the other crappy Canadian cable channels) stands outside, waiting to see if his pass will get him in.

A few good quotes:
"The words 'mission accomplished' can now no longer be used for anythig except a fuck-up." - Eddie Izzard

"Bush ruined the words 'mission accomplished' like Hitler ruined the little moustache." - Louis C.K.

"In the old days Britain, if we wanted to go to war, we'd send in a gunboat and blow the shit out of the place for a few hours, then come home and declare victory. We didn't stick around to see how it turned out. That would be bloody stupid." - Billy Connolly

"Bonnie Price Charlie was a retarded Italian dwarf. No wonder the Jacobite rebellion didn't work. Can you imagine an army of huge Scottish soldiers on their clydesdales being led by some wanker on a shetland pony, waving "Bongiorno!"
-Billy Connolly

"Who the fuck is Bonnie Prince Charlie? What the hell's a Jacobite? You guys are talking about more shit on this stage than I've ever even thought of, I'm going to spend the whole rest of the night: google this, wikipedia that..." - Lewis Black

The other day some people laughed and called me old school. i had no idea realplayer was "old". but the point is that whether or not it is hip, it i screwing with me. It shuts down randomly and randomly deletes song! I just went from having 606 songs to 534 songs. How did that happen? how am i supposed to get those songs back? This is so sad!

So my point is, what's the word on the street? what are all the technologically hip kids using these days to play songs on their computers? is it iTUnes? 'cause i have iTunes. is there anything more user/dumb friendly than iTunes?
