Santa came early this year in Vancouver. And he came in great numbers.

My advice to Santas for next year:
- If you show up at the first meeting point, do it 45 minutes later then advertised.
- Show up at the dinner-time meeting point if you're a night-time Santa.
- Pace yourself. In between giving out gifts, Santa mostly barcrawls.
- Plan to party with Santa all day and/or all night. It's a lot of fun.
- Bring some of your favorite Christmas spirits with you.
- Don't be Santa on an empty stomach.

It's a good service, but not perfect. Here are my feature requests to Flickr:

1. On individual photo pages, the meta description and keywords should be about the photo, not about Flickr. Yahoo runs a fricken search engine, you'd think they would get this right.

2. Give me a nice view into the referrer logs. Where are people coming to my photos from? Who's inlining it into webpages? What photos got viewed the most recently? etc. This would be the perfect place to build a Google Analytics competitior.

3. Expand the API to include sets. And keep expanding it from there.

4. Enable HTML links in photo descriptions on my photostream pages when they're showing small photos. Why don't they work here?

Finally, a flickr-related feature request directed to Google: Get an API or scraper set up to read the title, description and tags on flickr photo pages. Then use the info in your Google Image Search algo. Friday is the Critical Mass Bike Ride. Saturday hosts a Granville Island Feedback Open Forum and a Hello Al [Gore], Goodbye Gateway Rally (I think this might be big). Sunday has the Plenty Harvest Festival, The Word On The Street Book & Magazine Festival, and Portobello West Fashion & Art Market. The large Vancouver International Film Festival is ongoing.

Toronto often gets unfairly disparaged by the rest of Canada. Mostly by people who have never been there, or passed through once without any connection into the city. In reality, Toronto is an amazingly active, vibrant, and thriving metropolis. Diverse neighborhoods intertwined to form an economic and cultural powerhouse in North America.

Curbside bike parking posts and compost collection alongside recycling are 2 nice touches I wish Vancouver would copy. I also award Toronto the best public transit system of Canada's big 3 cities.

I volunteered at the Car Free Commercial Drive Festival on Sunday. I played a donations fool, wandering around acting crazy and asking people for money. Boris grabbed a nice shot of me in my freaked out costume, although it doesn't do the giant feather in my hat justice.

I posted a set of 118 photos from the day. Some of my favorites are these 3 weirdos, the BC Clettes, a hula kid, inside the donation bucket, a hockey kid, Velociraptor stilts, masks, an able-armed man, and the crowd shot that starts this post.
