HOWTO make your own devil sticks

This article describes the simple process of how to make your own Devil Sticks. The only materials you need are wood dowels and hockey tape, and it should take well under an hour.
MATERIALS:
- Wooden dowels: 4 feet of 5/16" diameter and 2 feet of 1/2"
- Hockey tape: one roll (more for colors)
- A saw to cut the dowels.

Get this stuff at a hardware store (or maybe a sports store for the hockey tape if you don't live in Canada).

STEP 1: Saw vs Dowels
Cut the thick dowel to be 2 feet long. This will be the middle devil stick.

You need to cut 2 pieces of the thinner dowel, the same length. Recommended: 20-24 inches long. (shown above - note I have 2 thick dowel pieces when only 1 is required).

STEP 2: Sticky Tubes
Pull down a long roll of tape (don't cut it).

Spin the roll so the tape rolls into a tube. Sticky-side out.

Wrap the sticky tube along the thick dowel as shown. Cut it off at the end.

Repeat this a second time, but reverse the direction so the 2 sticky tubes intersect regularly.

STEP 3: Exterior Tape
Wrap the thick dowel with one big piece of tape, only cutting off at the end. You can still just stretch the tape away from its spool a little at a time.

STEP 4: End Weights
Wrap some bulbs of extra tape on each end of the middle stick. This provides counter-weight for the devil stick in the air. You don't need too much, start small and test it out.

STEP 5: Hand Stick Exterior Tape
Repeat the exterior tape step on both of the hand-sticks. EXCEPT make sure to make small bumps as you tape. Vary the angle you wrap around to get these. This gives you increased friction and better handling.

STEP 6: Rock your Devil Sticks
Here's a grainy video of mine in action:

PS: Thanks to my bro for teaching me this years ago.

Hockey rule changes

The hockey contract dispute has finally been settled. The players eventually caved and agreed to a salary cap. I think that's probably best for the sport, so huzzah.

The NHL just announced a whole bunch of rule changes for next season. They want to increase the offensive flourishes and open play, and I think that's super. Here are a few changes that struck my eye:

- Following a scoreless five-minute overtime, three players from each team participate in a shootout.

- Two-line passes will now be legal. The centre-red line will be ignored for off-side purposes.

- The blue-lines will be moved closer together to create an additional four feet in each of the offensive zones.

- The goal-lines will be moved two feet, to 11 feet from the end boards.

- A team that ices the puck cannot make a line change prior to the ensuing face-off.

- Goalies may play the puck behind the goal-line only in a trapezoid-shaped area defined by lines that begin six feet from either goal post and extend diagonally to points 28 feet apart at the end boards.
Here's the full rule change list. It looks like they are pulling out all the stops and taking the lost season as an attempt to start out fresh. The changes look like they will create a game with less stoppages and more rushes. I'm all for 'em.

Via Whimsy Inc.

Both Montreal and Toronto have made it through into the next round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. This is trés good. The next round will be much harder though. Tampa Bay for Montreal and Philly for Toronto. I am hoping that one of them make it through. If they both did then they would get to play each other. That would be something alright.

And Ottawa really needs to get a good goalie for next year.

Before I go to bed I feel the need to mourn the passage of the Toronto Maple Leafs, who were eliminated from the playoffs tonight. It was pretty sad too, they lost 6-1. I still think not re-signing Cujo was a big mistake. Although he let the Red Wings get swept (by Anaheim of all teams) he was a perfect match with the leafs.

The Avalanche were also eliminated by Minnesota (which was another huge upset). My allegiance now goes to the Vancouver Canucks.
